Affordable peace of mind with the YourStride personal alarm

Affordable peace of mind with the YourStride personal alarm

Access help anywhere in the UK. Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, YourStride's personal alarm for the elderly ensures assistance is available wherever you go.

For further peace of mind and security, the YourStride alarm can automatically send an emergency alert if a fall is detected. Here's how it works:

  1. Watch identifies a hard impact.
  2. You're alerted through vibrations and an audible "fall detected" notification.
  3. A call is placed automatically to our 24/7 emergency monitoring team.

The fall detection feature employs a sensor to distinguish between 'hard' falls and other movements. As with other systems, it may not detect every fall and its accuracy depends on the magnitude of impact and the watch's motion.

You have the flexibility to enable or disable this feature and adjust sensitivity as required. The falls detection feature is available for an additional £2.00 per month.

Unlike a typical personal alarm for the elderly, the YourStride watch functions entirely on its own, without relying on Wi-Fi, a landline, or a base station. This allows you to easily access assistance anywhere in the UK, and also ensures the smoothest of set-ups. In fact, it arrives ready to use - straight out of the box!

Each watch undergoes rigorous testing by our team to ensure reliability before shipment. Additionally, it comes fully charged. Simply strap on, and go.

The watch boasts a sleek and unobtrusive design, measuring 55mm x 32mm (2.16" x 1.26") with a thickness of 15mm (0.6") at its thickest point in the middle.

Weighing only 49 grams, it offers lightweight comfort, complemented by a flexible silicone strap for a snug fit.

The alarm watch’s battery lasts at least 2 days on a full charge, extending up to 5 days depending on usage and location.

When the battery is running low, the watch will notify you with an on-screen message and an audible beep. Charging is easy - simply attach the magnetic charging cable to the back of the watch.

It takes around 2 hours to fully charge the battery from 0 to 100%. Powered by a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, it's built for longevity, enduring thousands of charge and discharge cycles.

The YourStride watch is packed with vital health-tracking functionalities, including a step counter, heart rate sensor, and blood pressure sensor.

Easily monitor your physical activity and cardiovascular well-being. Stay updated on your progress with the activity graph, tracking improvements over time. Plus, its splashproof design ensures resilience for everyday use.

With a track record of excellence, YourStride's founders were honoured with the prestigious Forbes 30 under 30 award for their decade-long dedication to designing award-winning products for the elderly. Their expertise in creating products that cater to the needs of elderly individuals is unmatched.

In fact, their products have even been used by none other than Queen Elizabeth herself!

In our journey to develop an alarm that truly met elderly customer needs, we discovered a common aversion to traditional 'red button' pendant alarms prevalent in the market. Customers expressed that these alarms conveyed vulnerability and were perceived as a necessary but undesirable solution. Most customers told us that they felt obliged to use these alarms due to a lack of options on the market.

YourStride's personal alarm for the elderly is a refreshing alternative. Our aim is for customers to feel proud to wear their alarm. That's why our personal alarm resembles a regular smartwatch - discreet, comfortable, and inconspicuous. We've designed it with your comfort and needs in mind.

At YourStride, we stand for limitless living and uncompromised freedom - at any age. Unlike other alarms confined by limited range, the YourStride alarm watch operates seamlessly across the UK. With this assurance, you can venture out and embrace life, knowing emergency help is always within reach.

Whether you need assistance at the push of a button or through fall detection, both options are accessible to you wherever you roam in the UK.

Forget about installation fees with YourStride. Your personal alarm arrives fully set-up and ready to use right out of the box. What's more, it's a standalone device, eliminating the need for pairing with a smartphone, Wi-Fi, or any base unit. It effortlessly and automatically connects to the strongest mobile network in your area. Simply wear the watch, and you're good to go.

With the ongoing digital switchover of landlines across the UK, it's essential to consider the future compatibility of your devices. Unlike traditional alarms for the elderly that rely on analogue phone networks, YourStride is a digital personal alarm. This means it will remain unaffected by the transition.

While BT has announced plans to cease support for the analogue phone network by December 2025, YourStride ensures uninterrupted service beyond this date. Rest assured, your alarm will continue to function as expected well into the future.

We’ve designed the YourStride alarm to be as easy as possible to use. So regardless of your tech prowess, you will have no problem using your personal alarm. Requesting emergency help is as simple as holding down a single button or having the smartwatch detect a fall.

And in the unlikely event that you do encounter any issues, our experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly in-house customer service team is here to assist you. Just reach out to us via phone or email, and we'll be more than happy to help.

Whilst some personal alarms offer either manual (SOS button) or automatic (fall detection) help-request methods, YourStride provides both simultaneously. Recognising that emergencies can arise from various situations beyond falls, this dual-option approach ensures maximum security and peace of mind for both wearers and their loved ones.

Some alarms for the elderly are designed to connect you to a named contact in the event of an emergency. Whilst this may have some benefits, it's always advisable to have actual experts handling emergencies. Our monitoring team, with years of experience, swiftly assesses the severity of the situation and takes appropriate action. They also keep your family informed about the situation as it unfolds.

Whilst fall detection devices have improved considerably in recent years, occasional false alarms can still occur due to the sensitivity of the fall detection sensor.

In the event of a false alarm, the YourStride alarm allows you to simply cancel the emergency call before it connects. Furthermore, you can tweak the sensitivity of the detector to find a balance that works for you.

Additionally, you can disable the fall detection feature entirely at any time. Rest assured, you can still use the manual SOS button to request emergency help whenever needed.

In addition to its SOS button and automatic fall detection, the YourStride watch boasts additional features to enhance your well-being. It includes blood pressure and heart rate monitors for comprehensive health tracking. Plus, its handy step-counter lets you monitor your activity and compare step counts over any period of your choice. Lastly, it features a reliable digital time and date display, just like any smartwatch should.

YourStride received support from various organisations and individuals nationwide, including The National Lottery Community Fund, UnLtd (The Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs), Design Council, Centre for Ageing Better, South West AHSN, and Resonance.

Their support enables us to continue our efforts in developing and delivering high-quality products and services tailored to the needs of our customers.

At YourStride, we are grateful for the collaborative efforts of these supportive partners, whose contributions help us make a positive impact in the lives of those we serve.

Using the YourStride personal alarm is incredibly simple, requiring minimal setup. In fact, all you really need is a mains electricity socket to charge your device! We will, of course, provide you with the charger.

Unlike other options, our stand-alone digital personal alarm watch doesn't require a phone socket, ensuring hassle-free installation. In fact, your watch arrives fully set up and ready to use, requiring no additional setup steps.

And, that's it! Whilst we recommend providing named contacts and key safe information for enhanced support and assistance, they're not mandatory. Even without named contacts or key safes, your YourStride personal alarm is fully functional, providing you with the peace of mind and security you need.

Absolutely! The YourStride personal alarm watch is designed to seamlessly integrate with hearing aids, ensuring accessibility and convenience for individuals who depend on these devices.

Our watch's design and functionality are tailored to meet the diverse needs of our users, including those with hearing impairments. Whether you wear behind-the-ear (BTE), in-the-ear (ITE), or any other type of hearing aid, you can trust that our watch is crafted to cater to your specific requirements.

Yes, many of our customers have pacemakers.

The YourStride personal alarm uses the same technology as a mobile phone and so the same guidelines should apply. In general, this means it is fine to use the watch and the advice is to maintain at least 6 inches between it and your pacemaker. We have many customers with pacemakers that comfortably use their alarm watch every day. However, if you are unsure, we would recommend asking your GP to double check and/or following the NHS guidance for mobile phones.

Yes, the personal alarm watch is designed to withstand splashes encountered during everyday activities like washing up or being caught in the rain. However, it's important to note that while the watch can handle splashes, we advise against wearing it in the bath or shower. This recommendation is due to the presence of small openings required for the speaker and microphone, which could potentially allow water to enter the device and compromise its functionality.

Therefore, to ensure the longevity and proper functioning of your personal alarm watch, we suggest removing it before immersing yourself in water during bathing or showering activities.

The YourStride alarm watch is small and lightweight. The main body is 55mmx32mmx15mm and it weighs just 49 grams. We’ve worked hard to make the watch as small, light and comfortable as possible. We use a specialist soft silicon strap so it’s also vegan!

The YourStride personal alarm is designed to offer convenient and long-lasting performance. When it comes to charging, you'll find that it's incredibly efficient, taking approximately 2 hours to reach a full charge from 0 to 100%. This quick charging time ensures that you can get back to using your alarm swiftly without prolonged waiting periods.

On a single charge, the personal alarm can last a minimum of 2 days, providing reliable support and peace of mind throughout your daily activities. However, under lighter usage conditions, the battery can stretch even further, offering up to 5 days of uninterrupted operation on a single charge.

This impressive battery life ensures that you can confidently rely on your YourStride personal alarm for extended periods without worrying about frequent recharging. Whether you're at home, running errands, or enjoying outdoor activities, you can trust that your alarm will remain powered and ready to assist you whenever you need it most.

Rest assured, providing it has sufficient charge the personal alarm will continue to operate seamlessly during a power cut.

Our personal alarm watch is designed to function independently of mains power, ensuring uninterrupted service regardless of external circumstances. Equipped with its own internal battery, the watch maintains continuous operation, providing reassurance to users even in the absence of external power sources.

In summary, you can trust that your personal alarm will remain active and responsive, detecting falls and initiating assistance as needed, regardless of power disruptions.

Absolutely! When making your initial purchase, you have the option to forego fall detection and rely solely on manual activation of the SOS button for emergency assistance. If you later decide to include fall detection in your plan, you can easily do so for just an additional £2 per month.

Likewise, should you wish to remove fall detection at any point, you can adjust your plan accordingly, reducing your monthly service charge by £2. You have the flexibility to opt in or out of fall detection by accessing your account online or contacting us directly at 020 3868 5575.

We understand that circumstances and preferences may evolve over time, which is why we provide the flexibility to customise your plan to suit your changing needs. With YourStride, you have the freedom to tailor your service according to your requirements, ensuring peace of mind and optimal functionality at all times.

Absolutely! The YourStride personal alarm for the elderly provides you with the option to cancel an automatic emergency call following the detection of a fall. Here's how it works:

  1. Upon detecting a fall, the YourStride fall alarm will vibrate, accompanied by an audible message alerting you to the detected fall.
  2. At this point, you have the opportunity to cancel the emergency call before it is initiated. If no action is taken to cancel the call, it will proceed as expected.

We've included this cancellation feature because, clearly, not every fall requires emergency support. Furthermore, like all fall detection devices, there is a possibility of false alarms. Whilst we've conducted extensive testing to minimise such occurrences by adjusting trigger sensitivities, we understand that automatic fall detection may not be suitable for everyone.

Achieving the perfect balance in trigger sensitivity is challenging. Lower sensitivities may result in missed falls, while higher sensitivities may lead to false alarms. Consequently, some users may opt to disable automatic fall detection altogether and rely solely on the SOS button for emergency assistance.

An alarm that offers both automatic and manual options, such as YourStride's personal alarm watch, provides users with the flexibility to choose the functionality that best suits their needs.

When you activate the SOS feature on your alarm (or a fall is detected), our dedicated monitoring team immediately springs into action. Here's what happens next:

  1. Location identification:
Upon activation of the SOS, an estimate of your location is automatically sent to our monitoring team. This information helps them coordinate assistance effectively.
  2. 2-way conversation:
Through the watch, you'll have a 2-way conversation with our monitoring team to provide details about the emergency. This ensures that they have a comprehensive understanding of the situation and can respond accordingly.
  3. Assessment and evaluation:
Our trained monitoring team thoroughly assesses the situation to determine the most appropriate response. This could range from a conversation to contacting next of kin or dispatching emergency services such as an ambulance.

We prioritise efficiency, with our team available to assist within 60 seconds of help being requested on 97.5% of occasions. Our emergency monitoring team has full TSA accreditation and over three decades of experience. They are available round-the-clock to provide assistance, and are used to handling over 17,000 calls monthly with professionalism and expertise.

At YourStride, we're dedicated to ensuring your complete satisfaction and confidence in our products. Here's how we back that commitment with our guarantees:

  1. Quality assurance:
We stand behind the quality of our products with a 12-month guarantee against manufacturing defects. If your watch experiences any issues due to manufacturing defects within the first year of purchase, we'll promptly address and rectify them. Our goal is to provide you with a reliable and durable product that meets your needs.
  2. Risk-free money back guarantee:

We want you to feel confident in your decision and satisfied with your experience.

These guarantees reflect our commitment to providing exceptional products and service to our customers. We're here to ensure that you have a positive experience with YourStride, and these guarantees are our way of demonstrating our dedication to your satisfaction.

We believe in providing a hassle-free experience for our customers, which is why we offer straightforward cancellation and return policies for our alarm.

Whilst we're extremely confident in the quality and effectiveness of our alarm, we understand that it may not be the perfect fit for everyone. That's why we offer a 30-day money back guarantee. If, within 30 days of your purchase, you decide that the YourStride personal alarm isn't what you expected, simply return it free of charge, and we'll provide a complete refund of your order. No questions asked.

Furthermore, you still have the flexibility to cancel your subscription at any time even after the initial 30-day period. If you choose to cancel, you can return the personal alarm device without incurring any hidden charges. We believe in giving you the freedom to make decisions that best suit your needs.

Absolutely. We partner with a 24/7, UK based, alarm monitoring centre which has over 30 years of experience in handling emergency calls. They are fully TSA accredited.

A personal alarm allows you to call for help whenever you need it. A simple device with a button raises the alarm to a 24/7 monitoring team. The team will understand what is wrong and arrange help accordingly. This quick access to emergency help allows many wearers to feel more independent, and provides increased peace of mind for both the elderly wearer and their loved ones.

An alarm system is an ideal tool for many people, providing a solution for a number of difficult scenarios. You may be unsteady on your feet, worried about living alone, or against the idea of moving into a care home. An alarm designed specifically for the elderly can help in these, and many other, circumstances.

Alarms for the elderly vary from big red neck-worn emergency buttons to discreet watches. There are even specialist ones that can detect seizures for people with epilepsy.

Alarms for the elderly were first used in the early 1980’s. These were the red pull cords you see in hospitals and care homes. These days, alarms are usually found in people’s houses as a way of keeping them safe and independent at home. Unfortunately, these stop working as soon as you’re outside of the (very limited) working range, and from a design standpoint, they are a hangover from red pull cord alarms that you see in hospitals.

For over 35 years, personal alarms for the elderly have been pretty much the same, and we believe elderly people deserve better! Sadly, the existing providers of carelines, lifelines, community alarms and personal alarms have not changed their designs in years. And that's why we decided to make a better alarm, designed with the needs of the elderly in mind.

We wanted to design a personal alarm that elderly people would actually like and would help them be more active and more independent. That's why we designed an alarm that not only makes 24/7 emergency calls but also works anywhere in the UK and even tracks your steps, heart rate and blood pressure.

It's why we are the highest rated alarm service in the UK (By customers on trustpilot). It's also why we were featured in Design Week for our work.

Best of all, we know it's important to keep costs down for elderly individuals so we offer our improved alarm for the same price as a traditional pendant. Simply put, it’s our mission to offer the best alarm for the elderly at the best price, and we will never stop striving to achieve that goal.

Another part of our mission is to keep on innovating the personal alarm, finding features and additions that can improve the life of the elderly. We are always open to feedback on this front, so if you would like us to customise your alarm in any way please do get in touch.

Personal alarms offer a range of benefits that extend beyond mere emergency assistance. They provide peace of mind, independence, and serve as a viable alternative to care homes for many elderly individuals. Some of the main benefits include:

  • Emergency help at any time
The most obvious benefit of an alarm is access to emergency help at the push of a button. The type of help you will receive will depend on which alarm you opt for. Some alarms contact your family, friends, or other named contacts, whereas others (such as YourStride) have a trained and experienced, 24/7 monitoring team at hand to provide expert help.
  • Peace of mind
Personal alarms can be hugely beneficial to peace of mind; just knowing that access to emergency help is always available can have a significantly beneficial effect on a wearer’s life. This is also true for the wearer’s family, and in fact, it’s incredibly common for somebody to purchase an alarm for a loved one.
  • Independence
Along with the increased peace of mind discussed above, the majority of personal alarm wearers also feel an increase in independence. In a survey we conducted, 97% of those questioned said that they enjoyed an added sense of freedom due to the YourStride alarm watch.
  • Care home alternative
For many elderly people, the idea of moving into a care home can be distressing. A personal alarm offers a real alternative. The fact that emergency help is available 24/7 means that many elderly people can remain in their homes and still feel like they have suitable support if required.

Personal alarms play a crucial role in enhancing safety and independence for elderly individuals. From fall detection to rapid emergency response, these devices offer invaluable assistance in various ways.

  • Fall detection
Every year more than 3.4 Million people over 65 suffer a fall that can cause serious injury [Age UK]. In the event of a fall, a personal alarm can access emergency help at the push of a button. Some alarms, such as YourStride, have fall detection technology built-in. This technology will automatically raise the SOS if it detects that a fall has occurred.
  • Emergency response speed
The severity of an injury often increases based on the length of the response time. This is particularly true with falls. We have heard a number of horror stories in which people have been left on the floor waiting for help for 12 hours or more. This kind of delay should be prevented if a personal alarm is available, with help being available at all times.
  • Loss of independence
A loss in independence can trigger depression, mental health problems and also have a detrimental impact on physical health. For most of us, it is important to hold onto independence for as long as possible, and though what works best will vary by person, an alarm will often increase a wearer’s independence. Aside from that, making sure you keep active is incredibly important, and that’s why the YourStride personal alarm watch includes a step-counter, heart-rate monitor and other tools promoting activity.

For many elderly individuals, an alarm offers the peace of mind and security to continue living alone. For others, a personal alarm is a vital component in remaining active. Whatever the reason, an alarm can be incredibly important, and particularly so for those more vulnerable to falling.

As mentioned previously, there are different types of personal alarms, some that can help you exclusively at home, others that work all over the country and even alarms for specific conditions (such as epilepsy). An alarm that can work outside as well as at home can be particularly useful, especially if you’re keen to remain active and are regularly away from your home for any period of time.

In our experience, there are a few different reasons why a person may choose to get an alarm:

  • If you are worried about living alone and want to remain as active and as independent as possible.
  • A social worker or a GP has recommended an alarm to you.
  • If you are at a higher risk of falls.
  • Your family worries about you being at home alone and a personal alarm would give them peace of mind.
  • You have come back from hospital and want to rebuild your strength and avoid being restricted to staying indoors.

It’s common for a person to choose to get an alarm following a bad fall, or time spent in hospital. They want to ensure that, if it happens again, they will have emergency help on hand as quickly as possible. Whilst this order of events appears logical, we would recommend investing in a personal alarm early to prevent some of the horror stories we hear about, i.e, waiting on the floor for hours in need of help. Investing in an alarm early can give you and you and your family peace of mind from the start.

If you’re unsure whether or not you should get an alarm, then further guidance is available. You can speak to your local council or GP to get advice. Alternatively, you could request an assessment from an occupational therapist. They may have other suggestions in addition to a personal alarm that could help you stay independent at home.

There are two predominant types of personal alarms for the elderly. These are go-anywhere alarms, such as YourStride, and the traditional fixed alarm types. There are benefits and downsides to each style which we go into in detail about below.

Go Anywhere Alarms

As the name implies, these alarms allow you to get help wherever you are. As a result, they often lead to increased independence and a more active lifestyle. They use mobile networks to connect emergency calls to a professional 24/7 monitoring team or to family members. You can converse through the alarm so that the situation is understood as quickly as possible, leading to a quicker response time.

The majority of these alarms will also use GPS to identify the wearer’s location. If you are purchasing for somebody with dementia, or who regularly gets lost for whatever reason, you may want 24/7 GPS tracking. If you are more interested in protecting your privacy, you may instead prefer to choose a device which only sends your location information when the alarm has been raised.

Lastly, when it comes to a Go Anywhere personal alarm you will need to know whether they are stand alone, like the YourStride watch, or whether they need to be used in connection with a mobile phone.

Fixed Alarms

These are the more traditional types of alarms. They use two paired devices to make emergency calls. There is a red button pendant, usually worn around the neck or on an elastic around the wrist, that when activated sends an emergency signal to a box plugged into your landline.

The box has a speaker and microphone built-in, and will call a monitoring centre or chosen family members. If you are close to the box you will be able to speak to them and describe the emergency situation. The real downside with a device that is connected to your landline is that the button has a limited range. This means that you will not be able to get help if you are out and about or at the bottom of your garden.

Features Traditional alarm Go-anywhere alarm
Works at home Yes Yes
Power cut safe Yes Yes
Function when landline is down No Yes
Unlimited range No Yes
Rechargeable Yes Yes
Sends location in an emergency No Yes
Speaker and microphone in the worn device No Yes
Speaker and microphone in a separate box Yes No

The set-up work required before getting an alarm for the elderly is highly dependent on which alarm you choose. A fixed alarm will require some type of connection to a landline, whereas a go-anywhere alarm (like YourStride) typically works straight out of the box.

Another thing you will want to consider prior to getting a personal alarm is who to name as an emergency contact. These are often friends, family members or someone else who lives locally. If you don’t have an emergency contact, we would advise installing a key safe which will allow access to your keys when the correct code is inputted.

The UK is transitioning from traditional copper phone lines to a digital network, a shift that promises numerous benefits but also presents some challenges, especially for those using personal alarms.

If your personal alarm relies on a phone line, you might face compatibility issues with the new digital network. These alarms may not function during power cuts, and other essential devices, such as security, smoke, and fire alarms, will also be affected by this change.

Fortunately, digital-ready alternatives are available to ensure uninterrupted protection. For instance, YourStride is a digital alarm and so is designed to work seamlessly with the new network. Further information on the digital switchover is available below:

Why is the UK's telephone network changing?

The current Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is outdated, with increasing connection failures and a lack of replacement parts. To address these issues, the UK is shifting to Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which offers clearer signals, greater reliability, and enhanced functionality.

When is the switchover happening?

The transition to VoIP is already underway, with completion expected by December 2025. If you’re still using an analogue phone line, expect your provider to contact you about switching soon.

How to prepare for the digital switchover

To continue using your landline after the switch, you need a broadband connection and a digital personal alarm. The main difference will be that your phone connects to a broadband router instead of a wall socket.

Will your personal alarm work after the switchover?

If you already have a personal alarm that depends on a phone line, it may not work on the digital system. Check with your provider to see if adjustments are needed. VoIP systems rely on mains power, so during a power outage, your alarm might not function unless you have a backup power solution.

Options to Consider:
  • Battery backup: Some providers offer battery backups that can keep your alarm running for about an hour during a power cut.
  • Exclusion from the digital switch: You can request to continue using your analogue phone line, but this is only a temporary solution as the infrastructure will not be maintained post-2025.
  • Choose or switch to a digital personal alarm: The most reliable option is to upgrade to a digital alarm for the elderly, like the one offered by YourStride, ensuring continued protection after the switchover.

Finding personal alarms in high street stores is challenging due to the infrastructure required for effective emergency monitoring. Most personal alarm services involve 24/7 monitoring, needing detailed user information and some degree of set-up, which high street stores typically don't provide. Companies specialising in personal alarms offer these services, which include ongoing maintenance and support.

In today's digitally-driven world, personal alarms linked to mobile phones have gained traction as a means to offer emergency assistance for the elderly in the UK. While these devices promise immediate connectivity and access to help, it's crucial to assess their effectiveness and potential drawbacks.

These alarms are designed to connect directly to a designated mobile phone, typically that of a family member, in case of an emergency. While this setup seems convenient, it comes with several considerations worth pondering:

  • Weight of responsibility:
A significant concern with these alarms is the burden they place on the designated contact person. This individual must be available round-the-clock to respond to emergency calls, potentially impacting their own well-being and daily routines.
  • Limitations of a single contact:
Relying on a single contact person poses risks, as they may not always be reachable or available when emergencies arise. This dependency on one person's availability could lead to delays in receiving assistance, jeopardising the elderly individual's safety.
  • Accessibility of mobile phones:
Additionally, the effectiveness of these alarms hinges on the availability and accessibility of the contact person's mobile phone. Factors like battery life or forgetfulness may hinder the timely response to emergency calls, raising concerns about the system's reliability.
  • Lack of professional training:
Lastly, relying solely on a family member or friend as the emergency contact may lack the expertise needed to handle medical crises effectively. Without professional training, there's a risk of miscommunication or delays in conveying vital information, potentially compromising the efficiency of emergency responses.

Given these challenges, it's clear that personal alarms linked to mobile phones may not offer the type of comprehensive service needed for the safety and well-being of the elderly. For more information, please click here.

No, unfortunately. While these phones offer some security, they don't provide the same level of safety as dedicated, professionally monitored personal alarms. As mentioned previously, these devices have certain limitations that are difficult to overcome, including:

  • Undue Pressure on Family:
Depending on family members for emergency support can place significant emotional stress on them, causing constant worry about their loved one's safety.
  • No Guarantee of Answering:
Family members may not always be available to answer an emergency call due to work, travel, or other commitments. Phones might be on silent or in areas with poor reception, leading to potential delays in response.

If, however, you are interested in a mobile phone that includes safety features, you can read our guide to the best mobile phones for the elderly here.

Yes. In fact, most YourStride personal alarm users pay no VAT on their order. This is because alarm systems in the UK can have their VAT reduced to 0%. There are a number of ways to qualify, though the most often applied criteria for personal alarm VAT exemption is a long term condition. These long-term conditions can be as common as high blood pressure, asthma, or arthritis.

As well as a qualifying criteria for the wearer, the alarm provider must also ensure that their product is eligible for VAT exemption. To qualify for this reduction in cost there are three rules an alarm system must meet:

  1. The alarm must be for personal or domestic use, rather than use by a business. (Some charities are also eligible)
  2. The alarm must have been designed to be capable of operation by a disabled person
  3. The system must alert a specified person or a control centre. This control centre must hold information on the person using the alarm so they can help in an emergency.

As the YourStride personal alarm watch meets all the requirements, the majority of our customers get the watch with a reduction in VAT to £0.

As mentioned previously, there are some criteria that you need to meet to be eligible for VAT relief. We’ll go into a little more detail on this criteria below, and by the end of it you should have a good idea as to whether or not you are eligible.

If any of the following three points are met, then you can order an alarm whilst paying no VAT:

  • You have a physical or mental impairment that affects your ability to carry out everyday activities.
  • You have a chronic or long term sickness.
  • You are terminally ill.

The majority of those ordering an alarm qualify for VAT exemption as they will have one or more long term conditions. As previously noted, this could be a very common condition (arthritis, high blood pressure, etc), and you are eligible even if you currently manage this condition with medication.

Some of the long term conditions that will qualify you for VAT exemption when purchasing an alarm for the elderly are listed below. Please note that this is by no means an exhaustive list, and if your condition does not appear below you may still qualify.

  • Amputee
  • Angina
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Ataxia
  • Blindness
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular Disease

You do not need to be a blue badge holder or be registered disabled.

As you go through the order process for a YourStride personal alarm watch, we guide you step by step through VAT exemption making it incredibly simple. More information about VAT exemption and relief is available from HMRC. We are also happy to talk through the requirements with you and help you decide whether you are eligible. A personal alarm presents a potential alternative to moving into a care home for some elderly individuals. While care homes offer round-the-clock support and assistance, personal alarms aim to provide immediate help in case of emergencies while allowing elderly individuals to remain in their own homes.

For many elderly individuals, the idea of leaving their cherished homes for a care facility can evoke feelings of apprehension and loss. Maintaining independence and familiarity is paramount to their well-being, which is why exploring alternatives to care homes is crucial.

Home represents more than just a physical space; it embodies comfort, independence, and cherished memories. Preserving these aspects is vital for the elderly, as it fosters a sense of normalcy and control. While transitioning to a care home may seem inevitable for some, exploring alternative options can help uphold these values.

Personal alarms linked to mobile phones or devices like the YourStride alarm watch offer 24/7 emergency support and features such as automatic fall detection. This technology aims to enhance safety and peace of mind for both elderly individuals and their families, potentially delaying or negating the need for a care home.

Furthermore, alternatives like home care, live-in support, and sheltered housing also aim to provide support while allowing elderly individuals to maintain their independence. These options offer varying levels of assistance tailored to individual needs, fostering a sense of familiarity and control.

Ultimately, whether a personal alarm is a viable alternative to a care home depends on the specific needs and preferences of the elderly individual. While personal alarms offer immediate assistance and independence, care homes provide comprehensive support and communal living. It's essential to consider factors such as the level of assistance required, comfort with technology, and desire for social interaction when evaluating the suitability of a personal alarm as an alternative to a care home.
